[1979:] Die ältesten Hinweise auf Shanties gehen auf "The book of the wanderings of Brother Felix Fabri" (ein Dominikanermönch) aus dem 15. Jahrhundert zurück. Es beschreibt einen Vorsänger und einen Chor, die während der harten Arbeit auf hoher See ihre Lieder sangen. Meist paßten sie sich rhythmisch den Arbeitsabläufen an. Später waren es vor allem die schwarzen Seeleute, die besonders gefühlvoll sangen, improvisierten und neue Melodien und Strophen erfanden.
