Jack the Jolly Tar

England.
Tune from Dorchester, Dorset.

It's of a Jack and a jolly tar
Is late returned from a man-of-war,
Jack heard them say as he passed by
Jack all in the street must lie.

    Chorus:
Fal the dal the di do
         Fal the dal the dee.

Then Jack stood awhile and heard a fancy
Between a squire and a lady called Nancy,
And Jack he heard the squire say,
Tonight with you I mean to stay.

    Chorus:
Fal the dal the di do
         Fal the dal the dee.

You must tie a string to your finger
And the other end hanging out the window.
I'll come along and pull the string,
And you come down and let me in.

    Chorus:
Fal the dal the di do
         Fal the dal the dee.

Damn me, says Jack, if I don't venture
To pull the string hanging out of the window.
So he goes along and pulls the string,
And the lady came down and let him in.

    Chorus:
Fal the dal the di do
         Fal the dal the dee.

The squire came by all in a passion,
Saying, Curse all women throughout the nation.
There is not one that doth prove true,
Or if there be 'tis very few.

    Chorus:
Fal the dal the di do
         Fal the dal the dee.

Early in the morning the sun was gleaming,
The lady woke and started screaming,
For there was Jack in his tarry shirt,
And his hands and face all daubed with dirt.

    Chorus:
Fal the dal the di do
         Fal the dal the dee.

O what is this you tarry sailor,
Have you broken in to steal my treasure ?
O no, says Jack, I pulled the string
And you came down and let me in.

    Chorus:
Fal the dal the di do
         Fal the dal the dee.

O then, says Jack, Won't you please forgive me ?
I'll steal away so no-one shall see me.
O no, says she, don't stray too far,
For I never will part from my jolly Jack tar.

    Chorus:
Fal the dal the di do
         Fal the dal the dee.
