[1997:] Bei Stanton Drew in der englischen Grafschaft Avon haben Archäologen die Fundamente einer überdimensionalen vorchristlichen Tempelanlage ausgemacht, deren Holzpfeiler in neun konzentrischen Kreisen mit Durchmessern zwischen 25 und 100 Metern angeordnet waren. Die Holzsäulen waren dabei, wie magnetische Untersuchungen des Untergrundes ergaben, in Abständen von jeweils einem Meter ins Erdreich getrieben worden; ein gewaltiger Graben von 135 Meter Durchmesser umgab die Anlage. Unklar bleibt, ob die Säulen auch ein Dach trugen. Die zwischen 3000 und 1500 vor Christus entstandene Kultstätte ist [...] der größte von acht bislang entdeckten Holztempeln und war etwa doppelt so groß wie die zur gleichen Zeit errichtete Steinanlage von Stonehenge. [...] Die hölzernen Kultstätten waren nach Ansicht der Forscher vermutlich Schauplatz für Opfergaben an die Götter. (Spiegel, 1. Dez)
